Getting to the start point

Post by gloverr on Sat Dec 19, 2015 10:26 pm

Just found this on a cycling forum:

"Great Southern Railway is ditching their Red service on the Ghan (Darwin-Alice Springs-Adelaide) and the Indian Pacific (Perth-Adelaide-Sydney) from April 1st 2016. The red service was the "economy" option (reclining seats), meaning there is no longer an affordable train option on those journeys. The only option will be to pay the full price of a luxury "Gold" cabin ($2000 for Adelaide-Darwin)."

I couldn't find a GSR press release concerning this but the timetable/fares for 2016/2017 do not list any "Red" (seat only) options.

Makes getting to Broken Hill with a loaded touring bike quite difficult {and potentially expensive}.

No direct flights. ReX flies Mildura to BH but their excess baggage costs are prohibitive.

Just leaves train to Sydney and then the Outback Explorer to Broken Hill. Long trip and bike must be boxed.

Change of plans

The "Darling River Run" has won out over this trip.
A couple of us will be heading from Swan Hill to Bourke or Brewarrina in late April, 2016.
Contact Ross, if you are interested in coming along.
