LED replacement bulbs for "vintage" lights

Post by SimonW on Sat May 09, 2015 5:49 pm

G'day riders,

I was looking around for a replacement LED tail light for my now vintage Gazelle. Although the Gazelle is still made in nearly identical form, nearly is the key word. The mudguard LED tail light on the new model might look similar, but it's not the same and doesn't fit.

It will probably be cheaper and better to buy new LED lights, but if you're trying to maintain the integrity/appearance of an older bike, but improve the lights, these bulbs and regulators might be an option.

Anyway, in looking to upgrade the old tail light, I took the lens off for the first time in 30 years and found the still functioning 6V 0.6W bulb, and the spare! in a special slot - who knew.

So I've found and ordered a not so cheap replacement upgrade. It's a screw in "bulb" which is a protected  LED designed to run in dynamo systems. I purchased the NL437R red LED from this English mob:

In particular, follow the the Bicycle Bulbs link, and the Dynamo Regulators link. These links provide good info about the possibilities and include the use of voltage regulators, which they also sell, for older dynamo setups without voltage limiters. See

Cheers, Simon
